Thats how long we’ve had the Kona
A nd the fucking mice have already built a nest under the engine NVH cover in amongst the coils, nestled in between the cam cover humps. *AND* there were shredded bits of cardboard stuffed into the turbo heat shield.
I set 6 mouse traps in the garage, blew out all the crud with compressed air and left the engine cover off to make it a bit less attractive.
A nyone have effective methods of mouse dissuasion for the engine compartment?
A t least no wires were chewed. Y et.
T hey did chew up the sound insulation on the cover right around the high-pressure DI pump. Little rodent fucks.

Leave your hood up when parked at home. They will leave it alone. My mom has the same problem with her Mazda and has had no issues the last two years by leaving the hood up.

Does it have remote start/stop?
Close garage door.
Turn on engine.
NONE SHALL PASS INTO THE GARAGE
in the meanwhile.
Open garage door after maybe 15-20 mins.
Wait another 10-15 mins to air-out.
Turn off engine.
Find dead mice/rats?

I’m not responsible for the garage smelling like exhaust fumes but I imagine that’s an easy way to gas them out as long as you seal up all openings (especially from garage to house!). It’s very morbid but possibly effective. The only thing I’m unsure about is the amount of time it’d take to build up enough carbon monoxide to kill rats, since newer vehicles don’t pollute as much cars that’re two decades or older.

They make these sonic/light things that are supposed to keep the mice away but may be a battery drain.

I had a mouse nest in the hvac defroster ducting. They died and dried up in the car. Datsun 310 so fuck it and send it to the car dump.

I assume you live out in the sticks? I have problems with the bikes I keep under cover with this, the trick is a lot of poison in the garage to keep the rodent population down. When it gets cold they move into the garage and that’s the only thing that keeps them from nesting in the nooks and crannies of my motorcycles .
I park the cars outside so they’re nearly as cold as outdoors so that keeps the fuckers away.

Best mouse repellent known to man. Non toxic, too!

Mice need 2 things: Food and water. Even a dripping compressor’s water will attract them (fridge, car, etc.,). Get rid of those two things (not always easy).
That along with the mouse traps and such should help with the problem.
Also, on sticky traps, never put peanut butter or nuts on there. The oils from those things will sometimes coat the sticky part, leaving the traps less effective.

I don’t know if this would work, but I want someone to try.

I don't like poison. We have many wild animals that might eat it but we don't actually want dead... I'm for sure stepping up my trap game though.

Yeah the food is gonna be tough. We keep the goose ad chicken food in the garage. Maybe time to invest in some of those plastic pickle barrels...

Our cats are lame and don't like to go outside in the winter. The house is pretty much rodent free as far as we can tell, but the garage is detatched.

The only way they work effectively is via a direct hit using a strong throw.

Is this one of those cars where they used that soybean-based wiring insulation? That’s one of my least-favorite automaker attempts at being “green”.
I’m a big fan of keeping cats on patrol to keep the mice under control, but another thing you could try is capsaicin-laced rodent tape.

I’ve heard that rodents hate the scent of irish spring. Drill some holes in bars and make some soap on a rope under hood ornaments.

If you do this, make sure the blower motor is off.

I don’t have much useful advise (other than lots of poison and traps, and I know you are avoiding poison), but I did once suck a family (including tiny babies) of mice into my shop vac from the airbox of my crown vic. Fortunately this was before I had a house/garage (car parked outside)
so I didn’t need to worry about where they came from.

If it’s just mice in your garage they don’t wander far after they injest it. They will die and stink up your garage some, but if it gets cold where you are it won’t be bad. I also use the tiny little house type poison so nothing bigger than a mouse can get in and eat it.
I never used to use poison but nothing else controls them around here. They get smart enough to start avoiding traps soon.

Ooof. I have red tailed hawks, coyotes and javalinas in my neighborhood (in the middle of Phoenix) , but so far have only lost a chicken.
When I lived in Tucson my boss got attacked by a bobcat that was trying to get his dog. Messed him up pretty good.
